In an article entitled "Children Who Live in Public Housing Suffer in School, Study Says" published in today's New York Times, Groundwork for Success Scholars Kyasia Kingsberry and Diamond Malachi shared their experiences living in public housing.
Groundwork is credited with helping young people beat the odds. "Kyasia and Diamond are exceptions: They have not done poorly in school but have excelled, in part because of their involvement in a free after-school program run by Groundwork, a nonprofit group in East New York, Brooklyn."
On Tuesday, November 18 a group of 11 middle school students from the Groundwork for Youth Breukelen campus traveled to Albany in support of after school.
The rally, organized by the One New York: Fighting for Fairness Coalition, featured a number of speakers including Groundwork's own Jessica Paulino, an eighth grade Breukelen student. Students were also able to tour the state capitol building and share their stories and concerns with two state legislators, Assemblymen Daryl Towns and Hakeem Jeffries.
